cast, flow forged
How are Cast Wheels made?
The most common type of casting is called “gravity casting” in this proces they pour molten aluminium in a mold. The aliminium spreads in the mold, hardens and sets.
The other and a bit better proces is called “Low pressure casting”. In this proces the molten aluminium will be forced under low pressure in a mold. This eliminates the air pockets in the wheels and makes them stronger then the “gravity casting” wheels. The backdraw off cast wheels is there weight. they can be quit heavy and are not optimal to use on perforemance or track cars.
The last type is called Flow-Forming. This makes a wheel that is almost as strong as a forged wheel, but at a lower cost. Instead of letting the allow fully set, it is finished by using high-heat, high-pressure spinning steel rollers to create the finalize the outer hoops and the wheel’s shape. Flow-formed wheels do still suffer from some of the same drawbacks as cast wheels.
